What to bring
Just the vehicle. Bring your registration card or DMV renewal notice if you have it — helpful, but not required. That's it: no ID, no records.

No appointment needed
Walk in any time during business hours — first come, first served. Most inspections take 15–25 minutes, so you'll usually be in and out inside half an hour.

What happens during the test
A licensed inspector looks over the emissions parts under the hood, plugs into your car's on-board computer, and checks the gas cap. Cars from 1999 and older also get a quick tailpipe measurement. You relax in the waiting area the whole time.
The crew looks the vehicle over and walks you through what it needs in plain words — and nothing happens until you say go.
Pay at the counter when it's done
Nothing to pay up front and nothing online — settle up at the counter when the work is finished. Cash, debit, and all major cards are accepted.
DMV is filed electronically
Your certificate goes to the DMV electronically — usually the same business day. California has used electronic filing since 2010, so there's no paper certificate and nothing to take anywhere. You can pay your registration online the same day.
The station is your choice. California lets you get your smog check at any BAR-licensed station. If your DMV renewal notice says a STAR station is required, just choose a STAR-certified location.
