Appointments & timing
Do I really not need an appointment?
Right — walk in any time during business hours. Most inspections are 15-25 min. We work first-come first-served. Appointments not required.
Can I book an appointment if I want to?
Yes — just call or text us to set a time — though walk-ins are always welcome. Appointments good for tight schedules. Fleet customers usually book. Weekend slots fill faster.
Do I need to do smog before or after I get my DMV notice?
After — your DMV renewal notice tells you if smog is needed. Renewal notice arrives 60 days before due date. Smog certificate valid 90 days for renewal. Skip-year vehicles get a printed reminder.
How early can I do my smog before registration is due?
Up to 90 days before registration expires. Smog cert is good for 90 days. DMV accepts cert within this window. No benefit to going earlier.
I just moved to CA — when do I need smog?
At your first California registration application — within 20 days of moving. DMV requires CA smog before initial title transfer. Out-of-state cert not accepted. 20-day registration deadline applies.
Can I get smog before my flight?
Yes — drive in and we'll prioritize quick-turn customers. 15-25 min typical turnaround. Let us know you're time-sensitive. We can txt confirmation.
Before you come in
What do I need to bring for my smog check?
Just the vehicle. We pull DMV renewal info electronically. Bring vehicle registration if you have it (helpful but not required). ID not required for inspection. No records to bring.
What payment methods do you accept?
Cash, debit, and major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, AmEx, Discover). Apple Pay accepted at most locations. No minimum for credit cards. Company checks for fleet accounts.
Do you have parking?
Yes — paid customer parking on-site at most shops. Wait time typically 15-25 min. No long-term parking. Drive-up smog at some locations.
Do you have a waiting area with WiFi?
Most of our shops have air-conditioned waiting areas; WiFi varies. Restrooms available at most locations. Coffee/water at some shops. Wait typically 15-25 min.
Do you speak Spanish?
Yes, bilingual English and Spanish service available. Bilingual staff at most locations. No translation delays.
Is your shop wheelchair accessible?
Most of our shops are; please call ahead to confirm at your nearest location. Customer waiting area accessible at most shops. Designated parking on-site. Service dogs welcome.
Will I pass? Common fail triggers
Will the check engine light fail me?
Yes — illuminated check engine light is an automatic smog fail. MIL on = mandatory fail. We diagnose the cause. Fix the code, then ask your shop about its retest policy — many offer a free retest window.
Light just came on yesterday — can I still smog?
Probably not — drive cycle hasn't run long enough. Recent code may show as 'pending' OBD. OBD readiness monitors will fail. Fix issue and drive 100-150 mi.
Will a loose gas cap fail smog?
Yes — EVAP system leak detected through OBD will fail smog. Tighten or replace cap as easiest fix. Drive cycle resets monitors after fix. Gas cap test is simple visual.
What does 'OBD not ready' mean?
Your car's computer hasn't finished its diagnostic checks since last reset. Disconnect battery resets monitors. Drive 100-150 miles to reset. More driving = more monitors set.
Why does my car keep failing the OBD readiness check?
Usually a recent battery disconnect, ECU reset, or a faulty sensor. Battery work resets all monitors. Intermittent sensor faults reset monitors mid-drive. We diagnose root cause.
Catalytic converter is under warranty — what now?
California emissions warranty covers cat converters for 7 years/70,000 miles on most cars. Bring vehicle to dealer first under warranty. We provide pre-warranty diagnostic. Warranty claim doesn't speed registration timeline.
After your test
How long is the smog certificate valid?
90 days from inspection date for DMV registration purposes. 90 day window for renewal. Valid for vehicle sale or transfer same window. After 90 days a new inspection needed.
When do you file the cert with DMV?
Immediately and electronically — usually same business day. DMV system updates within hours. You can pay registration online same day. No paper certificate needed.
Do I still need a paper smog certificate?
No — California uses electronic filing since 2010. Electronic cert is the official record. Keep your receipt as proof of inspection. DMV verifies your smog status digitally.
Can you re-print my smog certificate?
Yes if you call us with your license plate or VIN we can reissue. VIN lookup retrieves your inspection. We provide PDF receipt by email if needed. DMV has your electronic cert regardless.
Will you refund if my car fails?
No — the inspection fee covers the test, regardless of pass/fail. State-regulated fees apply either way. Fail vehicles get diagnostic recommendations. Many shops offer a free retest window after repairs — ask your shop about its retest policy.
STAR certification & gross polluters
What does STAR-certified mean?
BAR-verified higher-standard inspection station. Independently audited by state. Required for gross polluters. Required for DMV-directed retests.
Is a STAR station more expensive?
Slightly — typically 5-15% higher than non-STAR stations. Small price premium for higher-cert workflow. Required for some vehicles regardless of cost. Pricing displayed on-site.
What is a gross polluter?
A vehicle failing smog by more than double the limit on any tested gas. DMV requires STAR-certified station for retest. Must repair before re-inspection. GP designation logged with DMV.
Can a STAR station handle a gross polluter retest?
Yes — STAR-certified stations are required for GP and DMV-directed retests. Look for the STAR seal on the door. We are STAR-certified for this purpose. GP retest is a regulated workflow.
Vehicle types & our network
Do motorcycles need a smog check in California?
No — motorcycles are exempt from California smog inspection. No smog needed for any motorcycle. Registration renewal does not require smog. Applies to all model years.
Do you handle commercial fleets?
Yes — commercial vehicles up to 14,500 GVWR follow standard smog rules. Can queue multiple vehicles same day. Consolidated billing available. Priority scheduling for fleets.
Do you offer fleet accounts with monthly billing?

Independently owned stations sharing operational standards and brand. Each shop independently owned. Shared service standards across network. BAR licensing per shop separately.
Do you keep my license plate info?
Only as required by state reporting — never shared with third parties. Plate logged in DMV system per state law. No marketing use of plate data. Complies with CA consumer privacy laws.
