What to know before your Los Angeles smog check

We run 1 smog location in Los Angeles — test-only (Los Angeles STAR Smog Check). All of them are STAR-certified, which matters if your DMV notice directs you to a STAR station. Test-only means the station performs the inspection and is not licensed to sell you a repair — structurally it has no stake in your result. If you fail, the repair can be done at any BAR-licensed repair shop and the retest brought back here.

Does your notice say STAR?

If it does, take it literally — a regular station's certificate is rejected by the DMV, and you would pay for an inspection that does not count. Vehicles are directed to STAR either by BAR's high-emitter profile (make, model, year, mileage and inspection history) or by a roughly 2% random draw in enhanced program areas. Los Angeles is in an enhanced area, so the random draw applies here regardless of your car's condition. Any California station's licence type and STAR status is public at search.dca.ca.gov.

What decides the cost

Two separate numbers. The inspection fee is set by the station and posted on-site — BAR requires the price to be posted, not what it is — and it varies by vehicle: SUVs, trucks, vans and diesels are priced differently from a standard passenger car, and 1999-and-older vehicles cost more because they need the slower tailpipe protocol instead of an OBD-II scan. The $8.25 state certificate fee is fixed by California and charged only when the vehicle passes — a failed inspection never produces a certificate. There is no state-mandated STAR markup.

If you fail

A failed smog check is a repair-and-retest cycle, not a fine. California allows unlimited retests, and the certificate fee is charged only once the vehicle passes. You can keep driving until the registration expires — what you cannot do is renew without a passing certificate on file.

Our station here is test-only, so the repair itself happens at any BAR-licensed repair shop — bring the inspection report, which names exactly what failed, so the shop is not paying to rediscover it. The retest comes back to us. Whether a retest is free or reduced-price is a shop policy rather than a state rule, so ask before the first inspection, not after. If the repair bill is the real obstacle, California's Consumer Assistance Program offers up to $1,450 toward emissions repairs on 1996-and-newer vehicles — apply through BAR before the work is done, because approval is not retroactive.

One failure worth knowing before you drive over: if the battery was recently disconnected or codes were cleared, the readiness monitors reset and the car fails as "not ready" — nothing is broken, and it clears with roughly 100–150 miles of varied driving rather than with money.

Los Angeles DMV

Los Angeles is served by the Los Angeles Field Office (Hope St). You do not need to go there for the smog check itself — a passing result is transmitted to the DMV electronically by the station, usually within minutes. Registration is handled by the DMV, not by smog stations.
