How a California smog check works
Every smog inspection follows the same BAR-mandated protocol. Here's what happens from arrival to DMV cert filing.
Step 1 — Arrive (no appointment needed)
Walk in any time during business hours. Bring the vehicle. We pull your DMV record electronically from your plate.
Step 2 — Connect to OBD-II equipment (5 min)
For 1996+ vehicles, our BAR-calibrated equipment connects to your vehicle's on-board diagnostic port. We read readiness monitors + check for stored fault codes.
Step 3 — Tailpipe + visual inspection (5-10 min)
For 1976-1995 vehicles, we measure tailpipe emissions directly. For all vehicles, we visually verify the catalytic converter, EGR system, EVAP system, and other emissions components.
Step 4 — Result + recommendation (1 min)
Pass: we electronically file your smog certificate with the DMV within hours. You can renew your registration online same-day.
Fail: we explain what failed. At test+repair shops, we can diagnose and fix on-site. Test-only shops recommend a sister repair shop in the network.
Step 5 — Retest (free within 30 days at STAR stations)
If you needed repair, your retest is free at any STAR-certified station in our network within 30 days. Bring proof of original test + repair receipt.
Average timing
- Standard pass: 15-25 minutes total
- With diagnostics: 30-45 minutes
- With on-site repair: same-day for most issues
What you bring
- Your vehicle. That's it. Everything else we pull electronically.
